Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. 1 Cor 6:19-20

From the Tabernacle to Solomon’s Temple, God has instructed His people to pay careful attention to the physical expressions of His holy presence. The same could be said for our bodies, which have become the temple of the Holy Spirit – the very dwelling place of God. Teaching our children to care for their bodies is one way that we help them build a connection between the physical and the spiritual.

A recent article by Family Education.com reports that fruits and vegetables offer powerful preventative medicines against cancer, heart disease, and many other health problems. In a bit of divine humor, this article also admits that “not all of the protective substances present in these foods have been identified, and some of them probably never will be.” In other words, God alone knows how He created food to supply what our bodies – the temple for His Spirit – really need.

Facing a green bean battle? Maybe you’re home isn’t accustomed to a menu that includes the minimum recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. Fortunately, God made a wide variety of options in His wonderful world.

A trip through the produce section of a major grocery store will open your eyes to fruits and vegetables that you didn’t know existed! It is true that some healthy choices, sadly, don’t taste as good as we would like. We mortal creatures are creative! Pomegranate alone is seedy and bitter. When swirled together in Minute Maid’s new Pomegranate Lemonade juice, we find a refreshing and delicious source of Vitamin C and E, and all the antioxidants as well.

So be creative with what God has made. Try 30 different options in your quest to find 10 that could land on your plates or in your cups. Blend in some family discussion about our responsibility to give careful attention to God’s Temple, and you’re moving toward a healthier home.
