Healthy Foods - Part 2

Family Matters Picture

It is a given that our bodies need fuel;  the problem lies in choosing the best fuel to keep us going and to maintain good health. Unfortunately, the foods that are the worst for us are often times the most accessible and desirable.   With our fast paced, activity filled, time crunched lives-- fast food restaurants are a tempting, quick and easy fix for feeding the family.

At T Bar M Camps we are fast paced (FUAGNEM --fired up and going nuts every minute), yet we strive to be intentional with our menus.  Along with our Camp meals that are a TRADITION … a tradition (yahoo yellow meal- hello honey bun cake) we include a salad bar at each meal and a variety of fruits for many snacks.  Not to mention a phrase heard often around here -- hydrate/hydrate/hydrate!!

We must be smart about food and make wise choices.  Here in the USA we possess not only nutritional knowledge but the availability of healthy and nutritious foods, yet we as a nation have become overweight and unhealthy.  Let's boil it down to the two Q's---Quality and Quantity.  As parents of young children we control the quality and often the quantity of food-- we shop, prepare, and serve.  This is a great time to begin the groundwork of healthy food choices and in doing so exposing our kids to creative healthy eating habits that they will hopefully carry on when they are older and making their own choices.

Daniel along with his friends (Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego) are good examples of teenagers (yes, teenagers) acting upon their diet disciplines (Daniel 1: 8-16).   Are we that brave, courageous and strong?  Yes, without a doubt-- YES! Especially for those who have built their disciplines on convictions rather than preferences- no matter what the consequences may be.

Training is key in all areas of life-- remember our Luke 2:52 principle. This is our foundation for encouraging and guiding the growth of our Campers-- Let's all:

  • Know our hunger signals
  • Drink water, more water – a lot of water
  • Eat less (quantity)
  • Realize our bodies need the right fuel (quality)
  • Be good stewards (waste not)

So, fortune cookie say…"be kind to body … body will be kind to you.  Ah grasshopper: be wise."  (note from Jen...you gotta listen to Johnny on this one! : )
