“Stop, Look and Listen” to what God is teaching us when we are being corrected. Philippians 1:6 says, “being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Often times God uses family, friends and situations to help develop our character. Are we able to consider times of corrections as opportunities to grow and learn? Let’s welcome such opportunities by taking the time to “Stop, Look and Listen.”
STOP - Take time to really give full attention to what is being said. STOP an attitude of defensiveness, rather start with an attitude of appreciation for their risk of helping (smile sincerely).
LOOK at what trigger mechanisms put you on the defensive? LOOK at the situation from their point of view.
LISTEN, yes really listen, to what is being said. LISTEN to what God may be teaching you and them. This may be a perfect chance to demonstrate that a misunderstanding can be clarified by you, not by justifying, but instead by your actions that will say so much more.
I’ve had a bad habit of not listening completely when corrected. Instead I automatically start organizing my response, making a rebuttal without hearing things all the way through. You know, we can become foolish by responding defensively or negatively when it is totally unnecessarily only to wish we had just listened to the whole message or correction before we responded...
Could it be an issue of “my rights verses your rights?” I have a favorite phrase to redirect my thinking to - “not my way, not your way but Yahweh’s!” Camp is such a great vehicle for all of us (campers, staff, and parents) to learn how to “Stop, Look and Listen” to God’s active work in our lives as He completes what He has started. Thank you Lord!
