Welcome to Family Matters … and to be certain, family does matter! This week’s L252 focus is wisdom (from Luke 2:52, And Jesus grew in wisdom, stature, favor with God and man). Our Wisdom nugget is “Self Control” specifically in the area of our mouths with speaking respectfully, telling the truth, and not gossiping.
Everywhere we turn, from movies, T.V., music and the internet there is the challenge of guarding our words. In recent years it seems our mediums idolize smooth talkers that often put down, slander, misrepresent and just talk ugly.
God’s Word is the word that should direct our speech -- starting with our hearts and minds. Check out verses such as Ephesians 4:29, “let no unwholesome word / only a word that builds up come out of your mouth”. The straight talking book of James reminds us to be quick to listen and slow to speak (James 1:19). Proverbs is packed with clear pictures of a fool’s mouth and that of a wise person.
Self control is a discipline, and it’s much more effective when it’s “Christ controlled.” I find it helpful to replace the word “Christ” in phrases such as: Self esteem into Christ-esteem, confidence into Christ-fidence. This practice opens up a whole new way of thinking and speaking.
“Think before we speak” was taught to us as young children, yet it is one of the greatest struggles as an adult. Our words can do so much damage both intentionally and unintentionally. Monitor the ugly talk that you intake and use your words as gifts by being a word crafter that gives meaning, value and life-giving encouragement.
That’s why at Camp we take the time to think about our actions and reactions before our campers and peers... but why limit it to a week of Camp? Let’s make it a priority, a lifestyle of speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). We can through Christ! Go for it.
