Competing with a Positive Attitude - Part 1

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you. 2 Chron 20:17

Jehoshaphat faced “competition” that was overwhelming. Imagine the guys on your block stepping onto the basketball court to face the US Olympic team. A bunch of street players against the world’s best. Jehoshaphat and the Israelites were equally outmatched against the armies of Moab, Ammon and Meun. Rightfully so, God’s people were intimidated and in need of Divine help.

Some people who love competition actually enjoy intimidating others even before the game begins.   Most of us have been in a game where we felt overwhelmed and outmatched. Can the “battlegrounds” of the Old Testament teach us anything about facing competition today? I think so.

When Jehoshaphat called the people together, he brought them a bit of good news. He told them not to be afraid, but to have courage instead. Why? Because the Lord would be with them.

Even when competing it is vital to remember that the Lord is with us. His presence means that we can overcome fear and intimidation, we can play with courage, and we can close our ears to those voices of insecurity which distract us from playing well.

But the reality of God’s presence goes beyond our capacity to perform. His presence means that we are able to keep our anger under control, our perspective in line, and our emotions in check. Whether we win or lose, God’s nearness enables us to be humble when we win and gracious when we lose. On the court or off, our commitment to play well must include an equal awareness that He is there. Then our attitudes and actions can bring Him the glory of winning the battle.

Parents, instead of celebrating when your child wins, consider words of affirmation when he or she competes well and responds with grace when the game is over – regardless of the score. This is the real “field of battle” and the Lord is there to help.

Camper Corner: Can you think of a time when your emotions got out of line while competing? How can being aware of God’s presence impact your attitude or perspective when playing sports?
