Taking personal responsibility in our spiritual life is important, yet the great thing is we are not alone. Yes, we are not alone. We have an advocate and an intercessor already actively engaged as we read God’s Word, pray, seek wisdom, and put our faith into action...even when we speak. Hebrews 7:25 affirms that the Lord Jesus Christ Himself is praying for us 24/7. It’s incredible to know that when we pray, our Savior is already praying for us. The Holy Spirit also is actively interceding, comforting, counseling and bringing truth to our remembrance … Luke 12:11-12; John 14:16; John 14:26.
There are plenty of reading plans. The point is we’ve got to get in the Word, to sit / walk / stand in the Word. So, let’s be realistic. Choose a reading program, and give yourself some grace days to catch up at times. Be open and honest in your prayers; even pray the scriptures back to God. Mark up your bible. Ask hard questions. Sit, think, rest, wrestle and absolutely do not make it a mechanical “to do” check list.
Be yourself: if you’re a morning person take time in the a.m.; if you’re an evening person take time in the p.m. Consider reading two chapters of Psalms / one chapter of Proverbs or read two chapters in the New Testament and one chapter of the Old Testament, there are 260 chapters in the New Testament so today – July 19th with 132 days left in 2011 / divided into 260 = two chapters a day and you’ll have read the entire New Testament on December 31. Here are a couple other ideas: http://www.kenboa.org has great material and free articles that you’ll find helpful. Reading the bible thru in 90 days is a wonderful guide if you’re really serious http://www.biblein90days.com and Bible Gateway has solid programs http://www.biblegateway.com. Just remember - give yourself some grace days.
Go for it; take personal responsibility for your part of the spiritual growth / maturity equation. You'll never regret it.
