Are you an “xy” or “xx” chromosome? Our DNA has so much to say about our development of personality, physical features and the list goes on and on. Christ-followers have a new DNA ladder that redirects our entire paradigm. The big shift is that we are designed to “Love God and Love Others” not as solo pilots but as a body with all the parts working together. That’s right; we are body builders in that we need each other - check out 1 Corinthians 12:12-31.
Here is a good comparison of how the world loves as to Christ-followers new ability to love.
(This list comes from Norm Wakefield’s book “Equipped to Love.”)
World Love Christian Love
Source: self-love God through Jesus Christ
Motivation: to get To give
Purpose: to use To be used
Value determined by Value based on opportunity to show Christ’s love
- objects usability
Exalts man Exalts God
It is natural It is spiritual
It is temporal It is eternal
Hates suffering Endures suffering
Is based on feelings Is based on facts
Does not unify Perfect bond of unity
Easily angered, offended Not easily angered or offended
Driven by emptiness Driven by fullness
This is not a complete list but you get the idea. Christian fellowship is important for us as parents. Dads, we need accountability and a safe place to be open and honest with our wives and with other men who can ask us hard questions and really pursue us. Moms, it appears that you grasp this concept more easily, but it is imperative that you be genuinely transparent and authentic. Parents, embrace this and your parenting load will be lightened and better aligned.
