Hey Team Family Matters, huddle up. Today let’s review the pressures and privileges of “being the best.” Every successful team strives to be the best; it takes focus, hard work, dedication – you know what I’m talking about. It is good, right and even honorable to be the BEST. When we are on “top of our game” it makes all the sacrifice and commitment worth it. The reward is great, but WE CANNOT get caught with a better than others attitude.
Let’s break it down. Not everyone can or should be the quarterback, point guard, Libero, first chair or class valedictorian. These individuals have been blessed with talent that comes from above and have been supported by others (James 1:16, 17). They also have a tremendous responsibility with such a blessing. We’ve got to consider all our roles in supporting each other. The Bible has a perfect picture of “body works” where the hand, eye, foot, etc. are reminded …YOU NEED EACH OTHER to function (1 Corinthians 12:20-22). It’s true for our family, team, and any other group.
Alright, before we get back out there in the game, let’s be reminded. The pressure of “being the best” can be good (eustress = good stress) or bad (hypostress / distress = bad stress). Discipline yourself to use it for good as a tool to fine tune your efforts and rest in knowing you’ve given your best.
Secondly, it is a privilege to support others whom we know are the “best” in a certain position or rank. They do need our help. Everyone needs a supporting cast; NO ONE can make it on their own. These gifted individuals may have a confident air about them, but in reality they are often just a lonely, frightened soloist who desperately needs support, affirmation, confidence, and the ability to make and be a friend.
All the leading roles, honors, lasting friendships, communication/problem solving/decision making and social skills, cannot bring peace because doing it alone (simply put) is not in our DNA. We need help. Everyone needs a Savior and His name is Jesus Christ.
So, let’s be the “best” by choosing joy, supporting each other and not compromising in any area. Remain disciplined by being fully engaged, focused and committed.
Hands in, “TEAM” on three … 1, 2, 3, “T E A M!” (faint whistle blowing in background)
