Quick … what is the proverbial answer to, “Who is man’s best friend?” Dog is man’s best friend-- loyal, obedient, ready to fetch, sit and heel. There are leash laws in our neighborhoods and dogs that lack disciplines are “OOC” or out of control. They are thought of as dangerous because they are unruly and do not respect boundaries or understand how to behave.

Let’s face it, parenting can be rough (ruff). Stern discipline and demand of obedience has its place, but we have to be careful not to crush our child and demolish his or her will and character. (see Colossians 3:21) To discipline and train up a child is a divine privilege and requires great patience and skill. (2 Timothy 4:2)

Everyone has seen “the child” throwing a temper tantrum on the sports field or in the grocery store. It’s not pretty. In fact, such behavior can be embarrassing and downright destructive to everyone involved. Your child’s misbehavior and disobedience isn’t cute, hilarious or healthy. Do not dismiss this behavior for it is an outcry for help. It’s like seeing the tip of an iceberg – the base is much bigger yet hidden.

Let’s be honest, our kids learn behavioral responses from us. We don’t just have marital problems, parenting problems, and neighborhood problems … we have spiritual problems. When we act out of control it is a reflection of our reaction to our heavenly Father. It’s one of defiance, anger, pride and the list can go on. Who’s in control? The real issue is a heart issue.

Heart issues are best addressed by the parent to their child. Any kid who can’t learn to obey his earthly father, whom he can see, will never learn to obey his heavenly Father. This is a set up for spiritual rebellion. Taking a stand with tough love is just that—tough, but it will save child heartache and disappointments when they are older. A young man-child isdeveloped by how he has been trained.  With no training he can become “OOC.” Hebrews 12:9-11 clarifies the benefit of discipline.

I’ve come to learn to “Major in the MAJORs and minor in the minors” by choosing the real battles to fight. Parenting is RUFF, but it’s the HIGHEST calling and greatest privilege on the planet! Pray, pray & PRAY!

Obedience and respect will take you places and open doors. They are signs of maturity. As a result of such behavior and action, you will find that you’ll be given responsibility. Obedience is a heart issue. When you love someone your obedience isn’t a “have to”… it becomes a “get to.” Choose the high road and decide to mature in obedience and respect. (Ephesians 6:1-3)
