Accepting Accountability - Part 2

Do you remember back in Sunday school learning to sing “Oh be careful little eyes what you see … oh be careful little ears what you hear … for the Father up above is looking down with love ... oh be careful little eyes / ears …etc.”  Today’s children most likely have never heard that song.  They can sing “Veggie Tales” and other songs, but how can your child be aware of God’s intentions for them in his/her daily actions?  “Accountability before God” sounds big, overwhelming and defeating because His eyes are everywhere and He knows everything.   Good references are 2 Chronicles 16:9; Psalm 139.

We like others to be accountable for their actions and reactions, but when it comes to you and me being accountable before God, well, hmm … that’s a bit personal.    Just this week we faced the April 18th tax day.  Jesus recognized accountability to pay taxes when questioned inMatthew 22:17-22.  He pointed out to render to authorities what is due, but to God what is His due.  What should we be rendering to God in our personal and family lives?

Not wanting to be accountable does not dismiss the accountability.   Choosing to ignore accountability can lead to short sightedness in our personal development and bring hardship to those around us.  We will all give an account to God one day for all our actions as stated in Romans 3:19. Chapters three and six give us hope and mercy (not getting what we deserve) through Jesus Christ.  This is exactly what this Easter Passion Week is all about.  Check out all of Romans 3, but look carefully at 3:22-26.

The real issue is how do you view God?  If you see Him only as the Judge with a big stick you will cower in your accountability before Him.  If you see Him also as a loving, wooing, pursuing God then you will embrace accountability before Him.  As parents, we need to understand and teach God and His character to our family.  Do you know Him?

“Oh be careful little eyes, ears, hands, feet, mind and heart…”

Parents and other adults help mold and define you.  There is a time and place to be under their authority.  Eventually you will be taking on their roles, duties and responsibilities, so learn from them.  The only One whom you cannot fool, mislead and outsmart is God and He has your best interest.  He knows you like no one else ever can or will.  He has not given you a spirit of timidity (fear) but of power, love and discipline (2 Timothy 1:7).  Become what He has designed you to be.  Blessed Easter, He died to set you free!
