Fasting - Part 2

Fasting - Should kids do it?  Here’s an interesting topic that gets very little discussion. Should kids fast? The real question is why and from what? The focus of a “spiritual fast” is to slow down, settle in, and breathe deeply by seeking God. The intent is to hear, rest, and respond to God and His character.

Should our kids fast? Children do have a very creative mind and can handle such reflection, but should only fast if the purpose is clearly understood and they are able to process these thoughts and reflections.

Fasting is a spiritual discipline that draws our heart to God’s. It is a deeper level of intimacy. I would recommend you think it through, talk it through and pray it through as a family before doing one. It could be as simple as skipping a meal and spending time reading, reflecting, singing or journaling.  Be wise with the timing and prepare beforehand.

This discipline is to be viewed as an opportunity, rather than a “have to” or an appeasement, to God. He already knows our heart’s intent.

Fasting is between the individual (sometimes a family) and God, and it doesn’t have to be food. However, it should be costly for you … a tv show, a certain beloved privilege / activity, internet, computer games, golf, shopping, etc…you get the idea. Remember, the goal is to redirect your affections / appetites from you to Christ.

Read scriptures like Psalm 103, 139, Isaiah 40, Matthew 5, 6, 7; Romans 12, Ephesians 4, Colossians 3, Hebrews 12:1-3. I’d love to send you even more! Stop, look and listen for God prompts through His Word, your thoughts, wise council and what is consistent with His character.

Have you ever considered skipping a meal and during that time reflecting on God and His great love for you? Don’t call attention to yourself, rather focus on God. It’s not about you but Him. Don’t be afraid to ask Him hard questions. When you’re able to give up a treasure such as internet, a meal, TV, or phone you will be able to see and hear God more clearly without the distractions (kinda like when you’re at camp).

Pssst…God will not love you any more or less should you choose not to fast.

Comments

In counseling, I have dealt with more than one Christian young woman who started a fast and the enemy twisted it, resulting into full blown anorexia. If an adolescent girl is wanting to fast, I think the mothers need to be involved in every step to make sure the focus stays on Christ and the lies of the enemy are kept at bay.
