Corrected Vision … Do you see what I see?
1 Samuel 16:7, "But the LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.' ” Here is the key verse in the selection of a future king. David was a young, weathered, shepherd boy that both you and I would have over looked.
Today (Yes, Today!) our eyes can be easily fooled by the “surface exterior appearance” so often times we miss the real value of the interior. This is where the inner character lives - deep down in the soul. Yes, we can be fooled with accents, make up, hair styles and clothing (which often times are used for covering up insecurities) and totally overlook the outcries for help.
I often get to write reference letters for our wonderful staff or campers and I am careful never to refer to their exterior appearance. Rather, I highlight and underscore their inner world of disciplines, passions and their character.
Houses are a perfect example of my thoughts today as you can put on fresh coat of paint or add some shutters, but it is the foundations and inner structure of the house that determine the real value and worth. Do not get caught trying to fix up your outer world without a proper foundation and framework.
Yes, the pressure is intense to look “right” in your clothing and accessories, but no one respects or enjoys a shallow person that is only about surface things. Troubles and difficulties have a way of revealing the depth of our friends. If you choose friendship based on popularity and looks do not be surprised how quickly, when the heat is turned up, you’re left out and alone. Don’t settle for shallow relationships – don’t be a mile wide and an inch deep in friendships (Proverbs 18:24).
