Good Health - Think Twice - Part 2

When it comes to health … THINK TWICE.

“Actions speak louder than words.” This quote rings so true especially when it comes to our health. Parents, how well does your example speak to your family about health? Remember, they retain more of what they see than hear.

Consider your modeling of feeding your body physically. Are you a hyper health nut or a fast food junkie? Do your vehicle and your snacks point your family to a nutritionally balanced lifestyle? Your decisions today affect your health tomorrow.

Another aspect of our health is our spiritual health. Just as important as it is to have an annual physical checkup, we can and should do spiritual checkups regularly (you choose: weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc). Here at T Bar M Camps we intentionally “THINK TWICE” during our activities and teachings of spiritual lessons that apply to our activity.   I recommend it with your family – it’s fun!

Just as in physical health, our spiritual health is our responsibility. Modeling continues to be the most effective tool with our family. In a physical exam they start off with taking weight, blood pressure, listening to breathing and to our heart.

“Think Twice”- are you spiritually fit? How is your spiritual intake of breathing in and out God’s Word, praying, meditating, confession, thanksgiving? What is the condition of your spiritual heart – attentive, soft, hardened, ready, critical, guarded or open - is it fit? Modeling spiritual health for your kids is important and is witnessed through controlling your temper, a solid marriage, good communication, and behaving ethically and morally. This list is not all inclusive but reminds us that our actions and reactions reflect our spiritual health.

Want to really teach your kids… ask them what areas they think you could improve on – hmm – really listen and don’t be defensive. Thank them and let them know you’ll consider their advice. Learn to say the words “I’m sorry” when you’ve blown it.

Do not defer to the old adage of “do what I say – not what I do”, and do not play the blame game and shift excuses to others. Take responsibility for your spiritual and physical health - your family will thank you for it. Embrace scriptures like Ephesians 2:8-10, Philippians 4:13 and Colossians 3:1-17 as together we “Think Twice.”

You are responsible for your health. Your choices matter. Though you are young and seem able to handle anything - the decisions you make today will affect your tomorrow in regards to your physical, spiritual, mental, social and emotional health. “Think Twice” and take control by giving control to the One who sees and knows all – Jesus Christ. He loves you and wants your best even when you might not. 2 Timothy 1:7 is true for you!

Truly appreciate the message today and the way I can click the scripture references keeps me from skipping the passages that I may not have memorized (which are most of them!) and saying to myself "oh, I'll look that up later." As I take my spiritual inventory, I plan to "Think Twice" instead of going with my first answer, "sure, I'm spiritually healthy" - Upon reflecting on the words of Paul in the Colossians passage, "do everything" in His name...wow...have I got a marathon ahead! I'll be training, not just daily, but moment by moment, with each choice, first in my thoughts, then in the actions. Thanks for the good words!
