He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach. Mark 3:14
Summer family road trips have come to an end, but we can talk about another adventure that we can share together – the spiritual “road trip” that every family of faith shares. Where are we going? The hope is that we would “arrive” at becoming like Jesus during our lifetime – this is the objective, and every family member encounters unique experiences along the road. How can we share our faith with our kids as we travel?
- Walk toward Christ – Too many adults reach a spiritual plateau, that place where they feel they’ve learned enough truth for a lifetime. Yet simply the vastness of God inspires us to continue pursuing Him, learning and living out Kingdom values. If you have stopped “travelling” on your spiritual journey, take another step toward Christ. Otherwise your family might move on without you.
- Invite your kids to “hop on board” – While you might be involved in a Bible study that is way over your child’s head, you can still think of ways to walk by faith together. Does your church send home activity pages from the children’s ministry department or some other “souvenir” from youth group that you can use for conversation? Explore this as a starting point for talking about what your kids learned or thought about the concept, then share how you have grown or learned that lesson throughout the years of your own life.
- Highlight the changes along the road – Again, if your spiritual goal is life-transformation, then even your kids will be able to pick up on your changed attitudes, patience, compassion, temper, or peace. Tell them what God is doing in your life – how you are seeking to grow into Christ-like maturity, and ask them to pray for you even as you pray for them.

Moms and Dads are growing too… learning about God and His ways. Sometimes it’s easy to think that they know it all – or that they don’t know anything at all! If your parents are followers of Christ, then you are walking this faith-journey together. Ask them, “So, what is God teaching you these days?” If you’re really bold, then ask them how you can be praying for them.
