At T Bar Camps … Modest is Hottest

It is true that “real attraction comes from the heart” though our eyes are often distracted by today’s apparel or lack of it. Do know that your dress (referring to how we clothe ourselves) will address the audience's eyes you want to attract. I am suggesting that if you dress up or down, provocative or suggestive, classy or sassy that projection will attract the same reaction.

Today, I have three guest contributors:  Anna Fischer, Daniel Polk and the writings of Apostle Paul.

Anna Fischer, our Camp Travis Women’s Director, writes … "There are so many pressures from the world that tell us what we should wear to be "attractive" or "popular." God's Word says that beauty comes from within and we want others to see our inner beauty before anything else. We have adopted the phrase "modest is hottest “at camp because when we dress modestly we are not only keeping others from stumbling but also avoiding seeking attention from outward appearance… we are helping others see what matters first...the inside, not the outside."

Daniel Polk, former T Bar M camper / coach, now Dallas inner city sixth grade English teacher, contributes the following thoughts:

“There is a place for fashion as in the example of Lydia in book of Acts who was the dealer of purple fabric, she was a fashionista, but she used it for God’s glory. Christians often assume all fashion is sinful, but we are called to interact with the culture around us. Today, we need Christians leading and excelling in the market place.

Someone’s style of dress may not be sinful for one person, but to another it could be – why, because their identity is placed in it. The real issue is in the heart behind the outfit, and that is where sin can lie.
Clothing can become idolatry.

The Bible is unclear about today’s fashion, but it is clear about what our heart should look like. A rigid heart in clothing, for the sake to make ourselves feel righteous, can lead to a legalist practice.

What’s appropriate comes from your heart perspective. Often many Christians’ hearts are pulling social significance from a look to gain acceptance and identity.    We are to let scripture be our guide in reminding us that we have died to things of this world and are alive to Christ.

The clothing question that we should spend the most time agonizing and fitting correctly is “are we wearing humility, kindness, and gentleness?” as seen in Colossians 3:12. Check out the Apostle Paul’s words in Colossians 3:12-17 and make decisions out of a heart that seeks glorify God.”

Aren’t you glad that the Bible doesn’t mandate a certain Christian outfit and that there is freedom in Christ? Though the Bible is unclear about today’s fashion, it is clear about how our heart should look. How’s your heart? Reread Colossians 3 starting with verse 1 through 17. Embrace it, live it.
