See the blessings of Thanksgiving by getting into God’s Word
Giving thanks to our Lord for our families is good for all parties. When your children see and hear your heartfelt thanks to God (and to those around you) for the privilege of parenting it is like putting rebar in concrete. It reinforces their worth and communicates value before God and others. Your family needs to see your faith in action in both the small and big things of daily living.
Security comes to a child and spouse as they see you reading (and applying) God’s Word, praying meaningfully and intentionally and as they see you share your faith with those around you. No seminary degree required, rather a genuine hunger and thirst for God. Sincerity and openness are a must. It is wiser to say “I don’t know” or “let’s find out” than to act like a know-it-all, especially when you do not.
Bible Gateway is a good site to navigate for study, reference and there are a plethora of Bible Apps and aids on the internet (studylight.org; carm.org). I encourage you to introduce your family and friends to “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young. You’ll never regret or come away dry from an honest look into God’s Word. It will fill you up, satisfy, direct, comfort and counsel.
Don’t fool yourself, kids can see right through social Christian’ese - looking good and acting good for church. Who hasn’t had that Sunday morning family breakdown on the way to church, only to be masked until your back in the car? If not, good for you. The point is, we have so much to be thankful for, which is a command throughout the New Testament (i.e.Colossians 3:15, 4:2, Hebrews 12:28). Check out Philippians 4:4-9. As a family leader and parent you become “the one” that your children observe and glean from, so that they may eventually “put into practice” and experience the peace of God.
Blessed Thanksgiving to you and yours, Johnny & staff
