A brief look forward from Johnny Polk:
We want to address and equip parents with relevant topics. Our Luke 2:52 (L252) directs our weeks into categories of “wisdom (mental), stature (physical), favor with God (spiritual) and with man (social). This month’s upcoming topics address apathy, sex boundaries, praying together as a family and being a real friend (all our topics come from parent surveys, feedback and interaction). Our prayer is that this effort builds bridges, encourages and strengthens family dialogue and convictions. We treasure your feedback and salute your high calling of parenting. We are praying for you - you are not alone.

Chief's message:
I recently enjoyed the privilege of traveling to Israel. In our first moments on Israeli soil we stopped at Tel Maresha for an archaeological dig. The guides led us to a small tent on a hillside surrounded by buckets and dirt. I have to admit I was a little disappointed. I was expecting something bigger. Then we stepped into the tent and saw a staircase descending into the belly of the hill. Through a small hole we ducked into a large cavern that had been carved out of the limestone by human hands over 2,000 ago. That was not all, more stairs down into more rooms and then a spiral staircase etched out of the wall curled down to a dirt floor. The stairs continued beyond sight while we were left some 40 ft below the surface with a spade and pickax to see what lay beneath.
We began digging. At first there was nothing, and then slowly pieces of pottery and animal bones started turning up. After nearly an hour digging, Kristen (my wife) came upon something. It was a perfectly preserved oil lamp. No cracks, no chips. She was the first person to touch this treasure in 2,200 years.
How often do I come to God’s Word and see a small tent on a hillside that I think couldn’t possibly contain anything worth my time and simply walk away. Or merely scratch the surface for 10 minutes and think this is all the Bible has to offer. God’s Word is designed to be studied and meditated on. It is not a Dick and Jane book that can be fully understood in the first pass. It is the deep revelation of an indefinable God.
We have been blessed by pastors and authors who study and do the hard work helping us understand the Bible. That is good and necessary, but it is not all we need. We need to do our own digging too. Had we only enjoyed the excavated caverns above us we would not have found the treasures beneath the surface.
God’s Word is deep and full of amazing truths about Himself that He is ready to reveal to us. We just have to get our hands dirty.
