Apathy does have value in light of our culture.
Ap*a*thy (noun) 1. Lack of enthusiasm or energy – lack of interest in anything, or the absence of any wish to do anything 2. Emotional emptiness – inability to feel normal or passionate human feelings or to respond emotionally
Are you indifferent to the lures of our culture? Do you have a lack of concern and interest in the approval of our fashions and celebrities of our culture (this world)? Are you bored with all the reality TV shows because of their shallowness, the lack of character, integrity and honor? Have we been buying the promises that this world has to offer?
Establishing and recognizing apathy against the foolish things of our culture is good, healthy and honorable. It’s not an attitude of doom and gloom, rather an informed, relevant assessment of the values you embrace as a family and the depth of your convictions. Most people have preferences to protect their family, but a slimmer number of families have clear-cut biblical convictions that safeguard and protect their families.
I’m not suggesting that we be ostriches by putting our heads in the ground to hide from our surroundings. We need to be culturally relevant, biblically sound and roll up our sleeves. We need to act upon our convictions that please the Lord: “You have shown me what is good; and what does the Lord require of me, but to act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with my God” Micah 6:8.
Here are other scriptures to undergird appropriate apathy ... “May I be more concerned about the things of God than the things of men” Mark 8:33. “Since I have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Gospel, let me speak not as pleasing men but God who tests my heart. May I not seek glory from men.” 1 Thessalonians 2:4, 6.
Embrace apathy on the pathetic lies and promises of this world, and be a reflector of God’s great universal love in words and deeds.
